Is Spelling As Important As We Think?

I came across the following on FaceBook and thought I would like to share it:

I can read it, can YOU?

yuo raed tihs? Olny 55 plepoe out of 100 can.

English Pronunciation by G. Nolst Trenité

I have just come across the following poem by G. Nolst Trenité.  I absolutely love it! Try reading this out loud:

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it’s written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation’s OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger,
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little,
We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer.
Fe0ffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover;
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
Petal, panel, and canal,
Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.
Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
Pronunciation (think of Psyche!)
Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won’t it make you lose your wits,
Writing groats and saying grits?
It’s a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!

Just received my 3rd Monthly Payment from What Users Do

What Users DoI am very excited today as I received my 3rd monthly payment for being a Tester at What Users Do and completing 7 tests last month. I mentioned this work-from-home service before in a previous article when I first joined it and am still loving it!

I signed up (free of charge) as a Tester for What Users Do on 5 March and have enjoyed working for them ever since.

If you like the idea of helping companies improve their websites why not join me as a Tester? Don’t panic… the job is not technical; you just need to sit in front of your computer and speak your thoughts into a microphone as you carry out simple instructions. You may, for example, be asked to comment on the checkout process for an online shop, or comment on how easy it is to book a holiday online.  For each job you complete you are paid £8 or $8USD (depending on your country in which you live).

It costs nothing to join What Users Do. Once you have signed up you will need to pass a simple audition. This involves speaking your thoughts as you visit a sample test site. After completing the audition you can fill in your Tester profile and then you will then receive an email each time a test becomes available.

When you receive the test notification email it will contain a link to your What Users Do account. Log into your account and the Tester Dashboard will show you details of any available tests.  You can then click on a MORE link to read the test instructions.  If you like the look of the test click on the green START TEST button and away you go.

Each test typically takes 20 minutes to complete but MUST be completed and uploaded to your account within 2 hours of clicking on the START TEST button otherwise the job will automatically be assigned to someone else. What Users Do provide the software to record your screen and voice and automatically upload your commentary so there are no hidden costs.

What Users Do pay us on the 25th of each month (by PayPal) for the tests we have completed (and have been accepted by their clients) during the previous month.

As I said; it is free to join so why not sign up and join me getting paid for these interesting and enjoyable work-from-home jobs?

Writing Jobs available from CrowdFlower via Clixsense

CrowdFlowerSo far in this blog I have mentioned three of the Cloudsourcing companies I currently enjoy working for (WhatUsersDo, Clickworker and CloudCrowd) another Croudsourcing company I love working for is CrowdFlower. CrowdFlower is however different from the other companies that I have mentioned so far because you cannot work for them directly. You must work for CroudFlower via an agent. The agent I currently choose to use is Clixsense.

If you want to join me working for CrowdFlower then I recommend that you open a free Clixsense account by CLICKING HERE. As I said; it is free to open a Clixsense account and it will give you access to CrowdFlower jobs. After filling in the Clixsense signup form (circled below) you need to confirm your email address and then go to your Profile Page and complete all your details.

Clixsense

After you have opened your free Clixsense account click on the TASKS button and you should find that you have access to the CrowdFlower jobs:

CrowdFlower jobs on Clixsense

Try a few and discover which type of CrowdFlower jobs appeal to you. On confirmed completion of the ClowdFlower Tasks the agreed payment will be added to your Clixsense account balance.

You can increase the number of CrowdFlower tasks available to you by taking tests.  To track your progress on ClowdFlower and earn badges to access higher paying jobs you need to sign up to CrowdFlower Dashboard:

Writing Jobs from CloudCrowd: Work That Pays

CloudCrowdI have previously mentioned a couple of companies I enjoy working for (What Users Do and ClickWorker). Another organization I enjoy working for is CloudCrowd. Their community interface is a FaceBook application so you need to sign into your FaceBook account to visit them. CLICK HERE to log into FaceBook and learn more about them.

Once you become a member you can choose from a wide variety of jobs:

  • Writing
  • Editing

  • Translation

You can browse the available jobs in each category and choose which ones you wish to do. You get paid into your PayPal account very quickly for completed tasks.

Why not visit the CloudCrowd website and join me on the inside.

Writing, Translation and Research Jobs at Clickworker

ClickWorkerIn my previous Blog Post I mentioned that I am a Tester in the WhatUsersDo service where you can get paid for helping people improve their websites. Another service I am a member of is Clickworker.

As a member of Clickworker you get paid for writing, translating and doing research. If this kind of work interests you then why not join me? Registration is free. Simply CLICK HERE to visit their website and join me getting paid for doing work you love from your own home.

After signing up as a Clickworker you choose which jobs you wish to do and you can do these from your home or anywhere else you have access to the internet.

There are some basic tests to complete which will give you access to a wider range of jobs and some of the more specialised jobs also require you to take a short, more specific, test first to ensure that you can complete the task to a sufficient standard. These tests are free of charge and but I recommend taking at least one so as to gain access to a wider range of jobs.

When viewing your list of available jobs you can see a description of the task, how much you will be paid, and how long you have to complete the job, so you can choose which jobs you wish to do.

As I said earlier; registration is free so if, like myself, you are interested in writing, translation or research then why not visit the Clickworker website and join me getting paid for doing work you love.

Get Paid To Help People Improve Their Websites

What Users DoI was suffering from Writers Block several days ago and, while browsing the internet for inspiration, I came across a website offering quite an interesting service. The company is called What Users Do.

How often have you gone to a website and become so frustrated with it because it is so difficult to use? Perhaps it was an online shop and you found it difficult to find how to add an item to your Shopping Basket, or couldn’t find how to contact their Customer Services Department?

What Users Do offers a service where website owners can hire them to analyze their websites using a panel of home-based Testers.

Helping people improve their websites seemed quite an interesting and rewarding idea so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they are currently recruiting new Testers for their panel. I signed up and am loving it! If this is something that interests you then why join me and sign up yourself? After completing a simple signup form you are required to pass a simple selection test. After passing the test they will pay you up to £8/€/US$ per test you complete.

You need to install software on your computer (once only) which you use to record your voice and your screen while you examine the clients website following the step-by-step instructions they have given. You don’t need any technical knowledge; just remember to speak your honest, common sense, thoughts and opinions as you follow their instructions. Once you have completed your analysis your comments are automatically uploaded and, if the client is happy with your analysis your account is credited the payment. What Users Do will then pay you by PayPal on the 25th of the following month.

I am loving it! If you feel that you would like to join me in earning money from your own home carrying out interesting tests helping people improve their websites then CLICK HERE.

Slowly Learning How To Use FaceBook and Twitter

TwitterAlthough I am a Freelancer with a lot of experience in writing I have only recently opened an account on FaceBook and Twitter. Now I have these accounts I am starting to wonder why I didn’t create them before as they seem a fun way to interact with friends. Emails and Blog Posts take time to create and can be quite long but Twitter Tweets and FaceBook Status Updates can be short and simple allowing you to keep up-to-date with friends and family and what they are doing each day. I am loving it! If you want to join me on FaceBook or Twitter my profile pages are Ian Douglas on FaceBook and Ian Douglas on Twitter.

Have fun!
